Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe brought the Gospel from the Old World to the New World. And she brought me to a new world as a Missionary Oblate priest.

Growing up in a Catholic, Spanish-speaking home in Texas, I knew about Our Lady of Guadalupe practically since birth. Images of her were everywhere - home, school and church. My grandma had a very strong devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and she taught me so much about this truly unique devotion to Mary.

For example, my grandma taught me that Our Lady of Guadalupe is pregnant. This is the only Marian apparition in which she is with Child. I love this image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that portrays her as bringing the "Light of the World" to a New World.

When I strayed from my faith as a young man, I truly believe it was Our Lady of Guadalupe, with her motherly guidance, that brought me back to the Church. My homecoming Mass happened at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Austin, Texas. After the Mass, I began to see that my true calling was to religious life and as a missionary priest.

Our Lady of Guadalupe changed my life, and I want her to change your life too. I invite you to take part in several Guadalupe devotional activities that I'm sure will inspire you and deepen your faith.

As Director of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, I am honored to take part in a special celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 11. Las Mañanitas honors Our Lady of Guadalupe and includes colorful presentations, serenades and dances to praise the Blessed Mother. Musicians and performers from throughout the country take part in the festivities.

You can take part in Las Mañanitas by sending your prayer petitions to me by December 4. Participants will lift up your needs in prayer during our Las Mañanitas celebration. In addition, your prayer needs will also be sent to San Antonio, Texas where you will be prayed for during a novena of nine Masses at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and Tepeyac de San Antonio, dedicated to the Virgin.

Las Mañanitas kicks off the Shrine's Our Lady of Guadalupe Novena. When you pray with the guidance of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I ask that you include in your prayers the Oblates and the poor we serve in our missions. In New Orleans, the Oblates run a soup kitchen and homeless shelter at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. In Turkemenistan, a former part of the Soviet Union, Oblates preside at Mass beneath an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And in Tijuana, B.C. Mexico Our Lady of Guadalupe is displayed in dozens of Oblate chapels located in the poorest neighborhoods.

One of those Tijuana chapels became a second home for Guadalupe Morales Rodriguez. Guadalupe arrived in Tijuana with her parents when she was three years old. She became active in the Oblates' youth ministry programs where she learned the importance of going to church and to be of service to others. Despite living in extreme poverty, Guadalupe dreamed of going to college.

Last year, the Oblates awarded Guadalupe a college scholarship. Today, Guadalupe is studying foreign trade and customs, specializing in global trade logistics.

"Once I finish my degree I want to be able to help my church because my faith means so much to me," said Guadalupe. " I also want to help other students pursue their studies."
