All Souls

All Souls

The most spectacular day at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows is All Souls Day. Thousands of roses decorate the sanctuary, each representing a departed loved one. It truly takes your breath away.

Among the sea of flowers this year will be a rose with one special name attached to it - Fr. William Clark, O.M.I. Father Clark was the Oblate who started the All Souls Remembrance at the Shrine. Because of him, hundreds of thousands of departed loved ones have been lifted up in prayer over the years in this special way. Don't you just love this photo of Fr. Clark at one of the earlier All Souls Remembrance celebrations?

Fr. Clark amidst rosesI recently read a reflection Fr. Clark wrote to help people during times of grief. He wrote the article shortly before he passed away in 2018. In the reflection, Fr. Clark noted that death is just a stop on an everlasting journey:

"Our faith tells us there are only the living: those living on earth and those living beyond. This truth is beautifully confirmed in a passage from the Book of Wisdom which is often used as one of the readings at funeral Masses. For the believer there are no real endings, just changes. Each beginning leads to an ending which is really the prelude to another beginning."

On November 2 I will preside at the All Souls Remembrance Mass, and Fr Clark will be there too. He will be with me in spirit, and represented by a simple, beautiful rose with his name on it. I want to do the same for your departed loved ones.

To view the All Souls Remembrance Mass live at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, simply go to at 11:30 a.m. CST on November 2.

Our All Souls Remembrance is both a solemn and joyous liturgy. Solemn because we remember our loved ones who are no longer with us. And joyous knowing that they are now living in eternal life.

"Jesus did away with the everlasting character of death," said Fr. Clark. "He made death a thing of time, not of eternity."

I look forward to taking time to honor Fr. Clark and your departed loved ones on All Souls Day. Please know that I am eternally grateful that you are part of our Oblate family.
