August Novena

Celebrating 60 years of Healing and Hope at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows

Sixty years ago, the Missionary Oblates had a problem. The crowds attending the annual novena to Our Lady of the Snows were just too large for the grounds of St. Henry's Seminary.

So, in 1961, after 18 years of novenas at St. Henry's the Oblates decided to move the novena to the newly created National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. A tradition had begun, which over time would provide inspiration to more than a million pilgrims.

As you can see from these photos, the first novena was held at the Shrine's Lourdes Grotto because the Amphitheatre had not yet been constructed. And there was only one way for someone to take part in the novena, they had to show up in person.

Fast forward 60 years and now you no longer have to physically come to the Shrine to experience the annual Healing and Hope Novena. Last year we began livestreaming the liturgies for all nine days. We did this in large part because of the Covid-19 pandemic. But the response was so positive that we decided to make the livestreaming a permanent component of the novena. Thus, a new tradition has begun!

If you want to attend this year's novena in person, please check our website oblatesusa.org/live, first to see if any social-distancing restrictions will be in place. If travel to the Shrine is not possible, you can be part of the novena from the comfort of your home, just by logging on to our website: oblatesusa.org/live

During the novena you will journey with Mary in giving thanks to God for the many blessings we have received. I have attached a schedule for the novena which will help you plan your journey with Mary.

Novena Votive Candles

When a Votive Candle is lit, prayers are lifted up to Heaven. Often these candles shine for people in need of healing. This form of devotion dates back to the earliest days of Christianity. You or a loved one can be lifted up in prayer at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows by having a Votive Candle lit at this holy place.
