Mother's Day

Mother's Day

Honor a special mother with a beautiful carnation displayed at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

"Love is patient, Love is kind."

This verse from 1 Corinthians 3:4 is perfect for Mother's Day, isn't it? I'm sure God created mothers with these virtues on purpose. I have a feeling most of our mothers had to be equipped with plenty of patience and kindness to get us through our childhood and teen years. Maybe even throughout early adulthood.

When I think about my mother, "love," "patience" and "kindness" are definitely words that come to mind. I know I'm a bit biased, but my mother is truly the best.

When I was eight years old, I felt as if I might be called to the priesthood. With the encouragement of my mom, I became an altar server...the first step of most children who aspire for the priesthood. Later, at 14 years old, I went to the Oblate high school seminary. And from seminary I entered into the formation program.

Mom was so happy: She was loving, She was patient. She was kind.

But in 1993 I decided to leave the formation program. In fact, I eventually fell away from going to church altogether.

And so my mom became my prayer warrior. After I left formation she began to pray every morning that I would one day rediscover my calling to the priesthood. She did this every day for 14 years. And throughout it all she was loving. She was definitely patient. And she was kind.

In 2007, I told mom that I had decided to go back to the seminary. At the time, I didn't know about her daily prayer for my vocation. Mom jumped up and down and cried when I told her the good news. She had prayed more than 5,000 times for my vocation and her prayers were finally answered.

Love is patient, Love is kind.

On Mother's Day I will show my appreciation for my mother by placing a carnation near the altar of the Shrine as we celebrate a beautiful Mother's Day Mass. I also want to honor your mother, and any other remarkable mothers in your life, by placing a carnation near the altar in their honor.
