Sleep In Heavenly Peace

Sleep In Heavenly Peace

This Christmas season I invite you to unlock your doors and let Christ in. When I was a young priest one of my first assignments was at our Tekakwitha Indian Missions in Sisseton, South Dakota. At that time there were several Oblates ministering in Sisseton. The veteran Oblates parked their cars in the garage. Being the new kid in Sisseton I had to park my car outside. Someone told me in my first few days to be sure to lock my car doors or I might find someone sleeping in my car in the morning.

Two weeks later one of the elders in the parish noticed that my car was parked outside. She kindly suggested to me that I leave my car doors unlocked in case someone wanted to sleep in it.

Those words of wisdom were given to me more than 20 years ago, and I still remember them to this day. At Christmastime I am reminded that the Holy Family was locked out of places to spend the night. So, Mary and Joseph had to settle for a humble manger. If Christ was born today maybe He would have been born on the reservation. And maybe in my car, because I had kept the doors unlocked.

This Christmas I ask that you help the Missionary Oblates unlock the doors that prevent our Native American brothers and sisters from fully experiencing God's love. One way you can do this is by taking part in our annual Christmas Fruit Basket program.

Each year the parishioners at St Anne Parish in Naytahwausch help the Oblates distribute fruit baskets to needy people on the White Earth Reservation. It is our way of sharing the Christmas spirit with people who can use a helping hand during the winter.

If you would like to bless a needy family with a fruit basket at Christmastime, make a donation of $25. You can even make your donation in honor of a loved one.

I encourage you to make a Christmas season brighter for your loved ones and our Native American parishioners by following these simple steps:
