Easter is the Time of Year when we celebrate new life

Easter is the Time of Year when we celebrate new life"

And here on the White Earth Reservation, I can't think of a better example of "new life" than when Fr. Dan Nassaney, O.M.I. joined our ministries to Native Americans.

Father Dan came here to the Tekakwitha Indian Missions full of energy. His arrival was the culmination of a dream, one that Fr. Dan had for more than 60 years.

When Fr. Dan was in grade school, he already knew that he wanted to be a priest, and he knew he wanted to work with Native Americans. From early on he had always been fascinated by their stories.

But Fr. Dan's first ministry with native people did not take place in America. Instead, he ministered for 15 years to the native people of Tahiti. He immersed himself in the Tahitian culture, and was involved in a variety of ministries including parishes, vocations, prisons and youth movements.

After returning to the United States, Fr. Dan worked primarily at a retreat house and in vocation ministry until finally realizing his dream of being assigned to the Tekakwitha Indian Missions. He was 71 years old.

"God has a sense of humor," Fr. Dan told me when he arrived. "It took Him a while to make up His mind about what to do with me."

Today Fr. Dan ministers at all six of our parishes on the White Earth Reservation. On the weekends, he can drive more than 200 miles in order to bring the Sacraments to our most isolated churches. During the week, he is busy with religious education classes, sick calls and community improvement programs that provide food and other resources to the poor living on the reservation.

Father Dan truly has breathed new life into our Tekakwitha Indian Missions and I, along with our Native American parishioners, are grateful for his generosity.

As we begin the Lenten season, can you do a favor for Fr. Dan and me?

Are you able to make a small sacrifice in support of our Native American ministries? Your gift of 25 cents, 50 cents or $1 for each of the 40 days of Lent will help us improve our outreach to Native Americans here on the White Earth Reservation.

Thank you for being a co-missionary with the Oblates at the Tekakwitha Indian Missions. Your prayers and support bring new life to our work, not just at Easter time but throughout the year. You are also helping to make dreams come true on the Reservation, just like they did for Fr. Dan.

May God bless you for your generosity. Please know that we are honored to remember you at Mass and in our prayers.
