St. Patrick' Day Blessings

St. Patrick' Day Blessings

Saint Patrick's Day for me is about honoring two great Irish Patricks - St. Patrick and Fr. Patrick Guidon, O.M.I.

I'm sure you know plenty about St. Patrick. So let me tell you a little bit about Fr. Patrick.

Father Patrick was born in Ireland and studied for the priesthood in Rome. When he was ordained in 1950, Fr. Patrick assumed he would be going back to Ireland, but instead received a missionary assignment - Texas.

Fr. PatrickFather Patrick spent his first three years in Texas in parish ministry. He was then asked to move into the field of education. He was the Rector at St. Anthony High School Seminary in San Antonio and then was assigned to Oblate School of Theology (OST), where he served as President for 25 years.

How I minister as a priest today is due in large part to my time at OST and the visionary influence of Fr. Patrick. He transformed OST into an international center for theological training, allowing me to study and learn alongside classmates from around the world. Father Patrick was also one of the first Catholic educational leaders to realize that lay people needed to play a more active role within the Church.

Today, at the age of 96, Fr. Patrick has slowed down - a little. He lives at our Madonna House for elder and infirmed Oblates but continues to minister periodically at Our Lady of Grace
Parish in San Antonio. And he is always willing to listen and help people who contact him for advice, including me.

Father Patrick has been a Missionary Oblate for more than 70 years. And you are also a missionary by your partnership with the Oblates in our work to serve people in need in the United States, Ireland and around the world. Be a missionary today by following these simple steps:
