An Irish Blessing For You

An Irish Blessing For You

I have truly experienced the "Luck of the Irish" thanks to an incredible Missionary Oblate. That Oblate was
Fr. James Delaney, O.M.I. and he was one of the main reasons why I am a Missionary Oblate priest today.

Father Delaney was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1910. After his ordination he was assigned to be a missionary to Sri Lanka. But political and travel difficulties resulted in him going to a much different mission land - Texas.

Fr. David holding Oblate CrossFather Delaney eventually came to know my parents, and he even presided at their wedding. When I came along, Fr. Delaney was truly a mentor to me and the priest I admired most.

When I was 13 years old, Fr. Delaney asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told him I was thinking about the priesthood. Since that day, Fr. Delaney truly took me under his wing and introduced me to the joy of being a priest and to live as a Missionary Oblate. He helped me to enroll in the Oblates' St. Anthony's Minor Seminary, my first step to becoming a Missionary Oblate.

Father Delaney passed away in 2007 at the age of 97, after 70 years as a priest. At the time I was a pre-novice discerning my calling to religious life. So Fr. Delaney never saw me as a professed Oblate. But I always knew he was with me at every step of my Oblate journey, including my ordination in 2014.

The Oblates have a wonderful tradition that a new priest receives an Oblate Cross that had belonged to a previous Oblate. When I was asked whose cross I wanted, it was a no-brainer. I wanted the Oblate Cross of Fr. Delaney, my friend, my mentor and my hero. Through that cross, he is still with me every day.

As you can see, I have been blessed with the "Luck of the Irish." Today, I want you and your loved ones to also be the recipient of an Irish blessing.
