Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe

Most of us know that Our Lady of Guadalupe is known as the Patroness of the Americas. But did you know she is also know as the Patroness of the Unborn? It's true! The depiction we have come to know as Our Lady of Guadalupe shows her as being with Child.

Because of this special distinction I ask that we join together in prayer for the sanctity of the gift of life. As we raise up our prayers through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe we will pray for the unborn, for infants and children, for the ill or dying and for those whose lives were lost.

When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 she asked him to go before the Bishop of Mexico to request that a church be built in her honor. The bishop, unbelieving of Juan Diego's story, sent him away.

Our Lady eventually sent Juan back to the bishop with proof of her request: a bouquet of roses that were grown from the cold winter ground. A detailed image of Our Lady of Guadalupe can be seen to this very day at the Basilica in Mexico City. She is truly our Mother and friend in times of need!

Many Missionary Oblates dedicate themselves to the protection of the unborn. Recently Fr. John Cox, O.M.I. of our Tekakwitha Indian Mission took part in the Protect Life and Human Dignity gathering at the Minnesota State Capital. Another Oblate, Fr. Dwight Hoeberechts, O.M.I. walked across America - a three-month journey - in order to raise awareness for the sanctity of life.

I ask that you consider sending a donation in honor of the Oblates who work each and every day to protect both the unborn and those people who have had their basic human rights stripped away from them.

I look forward to praying with you for the gift of life through the intercession of
Our Lady of Guadalupe. May God bless you and keep you well.

Guadalupe Prayer

This year we will join our prayers to pray for all life, the greatest gift from our Lord God.

After our celebration of Las Mañanitas, here at the Shrine, your petition will be sent to the Oblate Provincial House in Washington, D.C. There, your prayer for the gift of life will be remembered during the Respect for Life Mass held on January 19 - the same day as the March for Life. Every year the Oblates provide housing to about 30 seminarians who come to Washington, D.C. to take part in this special March for Life at the National Mall.
