All Souls

All Souls

Every year at this time, I take a few minutes to determine who I would like to honor with a Rose of Remembrance at a very special
All Souls Day Remembrance Mass. This Mass will take place at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, with thousands of roses displayed, each representing a departed loved one.

I always have roses placed in the display for my parents and a few other loved ones. This year I am having a Rose of Remembrance added for a very special Missionary Oblate we lost recently - Fr. Jim Lyons, O.M.I.

Father Jim was born in Texas and ordained an Oblate priest in 1961. For many years he was a missionary in Guatemala and Mexico. The locations of his missionary work could not have been more diverse, from the rural mountains of Guatemala to the metropolis of Mexico City. But there was always a common core to his ministry, a preference to serve and be among the poorest of the poor.

Father Jim was known among the Oblates as our "Miracle Priest." He had a major role in the miracle that was needed for the canonization of our founder, St. Eugene De Mazenod.

One of Fr. Jim's parishioners in Mexico, Jesus Hernandez Serrano, was sent home to die of cancer, when Fr. Jim heard the diagnosis, he rallied his parishioners to begin a novena, asking Blessed Eugene De Mazenod to intercede for Mr. Serrano. One morning of the novena Mr. Serrano woke up and had no more pain. He had been cured. His miraculous cure was authenticated by the Vatican, a key component of the canonization process. On December 3, 1995, Mr Serrano, with Fr. Jim by his side, was at St. Peter's Basilica when Pope John Paul II declared Eugene De Mazenod a saint!

Today, Fr. Jim is among the saints in Heaven. I will honor him this All Souls Day, and encourage you to do the same with the saints in your life.

Send me your Prayer Petition. You will also be remembered in prayer during the All Souls Novena at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.
