August Novena

August Novena

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows has experienced many wonderful changes in the last couple of years. Thanks to our very generous donors, the shrine is shining even brighter! Amongst the new additions are the annunciation Garden's updated Bell Pool, and the new sound system for the hearing impaired and gorgeous new crosses at the Shrine Church. The outdoor Way of the Cross has also been updated.

But some things at the Shrine will remain the same year after year. Our annual Novena of Healing and Hope has always been an incredible nine-day journey in which people of faith join together to pray for Our Lady of the Snows' healing intercession.

The Healing and Hope Novena was built on tradition.

Devotion to Our Lady of the Snows was brought to North America in 1941 by Oblate Fr. Paul Schulte. Father Schulte was a pilot who developed a strong personal devotion to Our lady of the Snows. In 1943 this devotion led the Oblates to begin a solemn novena to Our Lady. They celebrated their service in the chapel at St. Henry's Seminary. As the number of pilgrims grew, the novena was moved outdoors. the Oblates soon realized that the seminary grounds would not be able to accommodate the ever-increasing number of pilgrims to the novena. They began to seek out a site to build a shrine in Mary's honor.

And so in 1958 Fr. Guild found 80 acres on the bluffs overlooking the distant Mississippi River in Belleville, Illinois. The first Novena of Healing and Hope celebrated on the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows was in 1961 at the Lourdes Grotto. In 1962 - with the completion of the spectacular Outdoor Amphitheatre - some 45,000 worshipers gathered for the nine nights of devotion and prayer.

If you are not able to attend but would like to participate from home by visiting our Facebook page ( or through our website: to listen to each day's homily.
